District Contest- my notes and judges’ notes
Everyone
|
Consonants, especially during first scenes and
song.
Ending – longer and hushed.
|
Mrs. Briggs
|
At the end of your lines, make sure they don’t die.
|
Joan
|
Tick tick – swing the clock.
Turn, we want the audience see the love on your face toward Brian that
betrays your words.
Change no you won’t – be more honest on the last one.
Highs and lows in speech. Walk
to Evan
|
Joan, Judith, Mrs. Briggs
|
Look at the men until they are off stage. More of a moment – use hankies
|
Tom
|
More childlike noises with planes and shooting
|
Dead girl
Tom, Mira
|
Kate cover yourself with bricks so that Mira and Tom have to move
bricks to get you out.
|
Foreman
Mr. Briggs
|
I have your eye patch
|
Viv and Soldier 1 Haris
|
Viv, we need to see you make a
decision to “go to the back.” Haris,
react bigger to Viv giving in – not so much that you are about to score, but
you are surprised.
|
Judith
|
Louder on shirt dialogue
IF HIS HELMET is out there, use it during ending or yours and Joan’s
scene.
|
Frank
|
See tattered flag when you die
|
Carly
|
Light on Judith reading death letter.
|
Parachuter
|
Arch back when shot.
|
Joan and Brian
|
Work on levels in your relationship at the beginning.
|
Jill Ludington
|
Live people in dead scene
Ludington suggested waiting to look for items until after Frank’s
monologue. There is a spit focus.
Another split focus is when Tom is hurt. Stop and freeze ?
Scenes rushed – Frank and Judith
More levels and touching in Joan and Judith’s scene. Quiet, speed,
slow, loud – more variety
|
Peggy Lovett
|
More pain in Joan as Brian goes to war – dialogue with him.
Bring dead girl out more so we can see her before she speaks.
LOVED DEAD PEOPLE
Only thing missing is smoke – but she doesn’t think we need it (but
she mentioned it)
|
Shari Belizzi-Davis
|
First time I ever cried judging a one act.
Characters need to face each other when addressing each other (?) –
must be dead Frank and living Judith.
When screaming, lower vocal register
Watch profiling
Careful with music being too loud under dialogue.
Stage business for Judith and Frank – she says they need an obstacle
between them (might be interesting)
Watch spontaneity. Keep it going – doing it for the first time.
|
Next week
|
Gary Davis – 1. Diction and projection 2. Bigger than life characters 3. Character arcs. 4. Create the world of the play
Sherran Geistmann – Loves singing and stage pictures. Big on vocal
variety, (THIS IS CRAZY – but walk
quieter on unit sets. Don’t shift from
foot to foot. LOVES SLOW MOTION.

i don’t think this was a great performance, but one of our best. overall i think we performed very well, and just need to work small parts. we need to make sure everyone has the props they need and are prepared on and off stage. i really think we need to be in character back stage, we did an okay job at district but we could always be better. i believe we just need to focus more, and add more dimensions to characters when possible.
ReplyDeleteI know it’s getting tough but I think all the little things that we’ve been putting off fixing are starting to show. It’s getting both harder and easier to see the flaws in our show because they aren’t big problems like blocking or line memorization but they are the small ones like consonants and emotion that may on stage seem unimportant but to the audience can seem to scream out what we are lacking as a whole.
ReplyDeleteI believe this was an amazing performance. However, we still have little things to work on. We need to move on and work harder into building up our show instead of going backwards, and making the same mistakes over and over again. I believe we can make this show better and better each time we practice or perform. Our big flaw that we need to fix is people noises and reacting more. Once we get that down this show will be even more amazing. Let’s do this guys! We can make it to state!
ReplyDeleteGreat rehearsal today! As we continue in this competition, everyone needs to make spontaneous decisions which will cause more real reactions. Especially now we need to make sure that we don't look too rehearsed (slow motion is!).
ReplyDeleteThis perforcance was amazing yet we had rough spots. I messed up on the letter and that was my bad! But Ashlynn played it off!!! Thant won’t happen again! I think This performance was definitely not our best, however, we know what to do as a cast and crew to turn that performance into an amazing performance!!
ReplyDeleteI thought that this rehearsal went well, especially since we just got back from spring break, but I think we are still a little rusty. I agree with what hannah said about being in character on and off stage and I struggle with that a lot. I also think we all need to get in the mind set of competition because if we don’t take it seriously it won’t go well for us. Tulia is going to be tough because we aren’t used to their stage and lights and everything but I know that we will pull through and do the best we can. I personally need to work on people noises in many of the scenes I’m in because unreal life nothing would be that quiet. I think we should try and find words that we are allowed to say and that might help us create more noise on stage. I really like how we changed ashlynn shooting evan, it looks so cool, but I also need to work on the slow motion there a little bit more. I also agree with what marinda said that if we are critiques in something, we need to fix it the first time if we can and not have to go over the same things we’ve been trying to fix when we can work on new things that could better the show. I personally need to work on the “sexy” aspect of my character and get that down. Overall I think we are doing great we just need to keep going strong and keep improving our play!
ReplyDeleteI thought our performance at district was great! But we still need to work on some things such as diction in the first few scenes. We can’t expect everyone to understand us, I know that it sounds normal to us but that’s because we practice this play a lot. To others it’s a completely different way of talking. We had this problem last year but I think that we are doing 10 times better and we can solve this issue very easily. Our reactions and people noises could use more work and I know we can get that down as well. At this time in our season is where we usually get comfortable with what we are doing and that’s when it could look like we are just going through the motions and not really listening to the lines and being your character. I know it’s hard because we all know this play so well, but if we try new things it might mix things up for the better, and if it doesn’t work I’m sure Mrs. Griffis or Mrs. Couch will tell us. I love it when we all pitch in ideas and try to make the show better, it really shows how much we care about this play and the people involved. I need to work on my reaction in the second factory scene, I kinda just gasp and call it good, when i should be afraid that I’m going to lose my life. I think I just need to research what happened to accused traitors so that I can really know how to feel as my character. I also want to work on the dead scene, I still don’t know if we are supposed to be frozen or telling our stories, I just think we should all brainstorm and come up with ideas for that. Overall I love how much everyone has committed to this show and I’m so proud to be a part of the front.:)
ReplyDeletethis late into rehearsals and performances, it is all looking very rehearsed. we need people to start doing things that they normally wouldn't to spark real reactions in other characters. this won't only bring the life back into our play, it will also make you explore your character deeper by knowing how they would react to something that isn't in the script.
ReplyDeletePeople noises and movements are looking very rehearsed. That’s not good. We are too good of a group to let that stop us now. Think about every action you do. Make it purposeful. Move with meaning.
ReplyDeleteI am so proud of how we did at district, but that is no reason to get mediocre. Like everyone is saying, we need to LIVE as our character. Breathe, think, feel, discover, LIVE. It will draw people out of high school OAP and bring them into the world we are trying to create, but again SO PROUD!
ReplyDeleteIt is so great the work we did. Everyone outstanding job. Colin needs to be more childish and make more airplane noises. Consonants and accents!!! The sound needs to be quieter on some parts and louder on others. I am so excited to see what we will do this.
ReplyDeleteThis rehearsal was okay, I know we just got back from Spring Break and we are all a little tired and forgot some of our lines and our characters, but we need to just keep pushing forward and try our best the get back in character and keep the connection with your character. Great job everyone!
ReplyDeleteThis was one of our better performances! Makeup needs to be darker on several people and alee needs gray hair I think. Remember people noises. However they were a lot better in this performance. Colin make sure you relax when you get on stage because you kind of forgot you line there for a second. Be SPONTANEOUS. it was the judges critics. She wanted y’all to have spontenuety! Overall well done.
ReplyDeleteI’ll work harder on my death as the parachuter. I just need to get the timing right with Ashlynn and not die center stage. I feel once we work on it more during tonight’s rehearsal we can make it tha “bomb” ;) pun intended
ReplyDeletelast night I talked to my mom about losing brian. she made some good points about how it should hurt me, i’ll use that. i’m also looking for movies that will make me cry, because then I wil have an emotion to hold onto when looking for tears. any suggestions? think charlie st. cloud!
ReplyDeletei will work on being louder in franks shirt scene. If franks helmet is out there i will use it at the end of the play.

ReplyDeleteI herd this performance was excellent but we do have those small little critiques that we have to really work on the small ones are the hardest but the small problems are the ones we have to focus on that’s what will be the difference from winning state and losing if the small things don’t come out we will regret it later
ReplyDeletethis performance was very good. of course there were a few small things that are very nit picky that we have to get down. the judges at district were great but the farther we go the tougher the judges will be on us. also like everyone has said it is very important to not act on stage. as cheesy as they are the signs outside the stage doors are really true. you shouldn’t be acting. it should be you becoming another person. their actions become yours and their emotions become yours. you have to make each thing you do look spontaneous and natural. i think if we keep pushing and fixing the small details and stuff we can do really well.
ReplyDeleteMake sure not to lose accents and hitting those verbs. It’s the small things like people noises and everything. Keep up the work, focus on personal things like that and take critiques.
ReplyDeleteI’ll work on plane noises, and I’ll try not to forget my lines agin!
ReplyDeleteAlso I thought we did very well. Great job everyone
DeleteMe and Ashlynn will work on or relationship and get the audience believing the pain and struggle between both of us.
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna work on hitting my consonants a little bit more in the first factory scene
ReplyDeleteThe eye patch is very uncomfortable but I think I look cool. And also I will work on my diction because it is very poor.
ReplyDeleteThis was a very good performance, but ya just going to get tougher from here. We need to step up in every scene and really connect with the characters to convey the message that is ultimately being told here. Try new things and feel your characters and their purpose in the story

ReplyDeleteAs only my second year in the program I don’t know a whole lot but I do know that working with all of you on front has been a subtle blessing. This is a great group and if we stay in character abide by the rules and critiques. Me and Kadyn be in love Jonny and the Briggses be a family the workers be workers I have no doubt in my mind we will go far but like I said it all has to work together. So if we have a shot to state why not take it.
